Andy Samberg is a POPSTAR in new comedy on Blu-Ray/DVD

Ever since he left Saturday Night Live, Andy Samberg has done a pretty good job of staying in the pop-culture limelight, breaking out like other former SNL cast members in new television and film projects. Now the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star has a movie coming out on Blu-Ray and DVD where he plays a pop star who is trying to remain relevant.

The film is a comedy called POPSTAR: NEVER STOP STOPPING and it was written by Samberg and his Lonely Island homies. I’ve got the details about the Blu-Ray/DVD release in the following press release. And I’ve got digital copies to give away to a couple lucky Geek To Me readers!

Eating Crow: The Star Trek Beyond Review on “Geek/Countergeek”

In this latest edition of “Geek/Countergeek” Keith and I offer our reviews and reflections on the new Ghostbusters movie. How did it hold up next to the original films?

And, after lamenting how Star Trek has lost its way with the recent movies – and even giving poor Chris Pine grief – I have to eat my share of crow after seeing Star Trek Beyond…

Now I’m looking forward to the new television series!

What did you think about Star Trek Beyond?

Wonder Woman Film Costumes and Props on display in Las Vegas

First up comes all this news from the set of the new Justice League film, and now these images from the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, where costumes and props from the new Wonder Woman film (currently in production) are on display:

After the backlash received by Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it looks like DC Comics and Warner Bros. have been going into overdrive to generate as much positive buzz as they can for their slate of comic book films.

Marvel goes tiny in “Ant-Man” Blu-Ray promo

In what was their biggest gamble since “Guardians of the Galaxy”, the folks at Marvel Studios launched a superhero series in their “Marvel Cinematic Universe” (MCU) based on one of their lesser-known heroes named “Ant-Man.” Of course, when you have a character that’s best known for shrinking to the size of an ant, you have to change your way of thinking when it comes to promoting his movie. You have to get away from the larger-than-life scope of heroes like Captain America, Iron Man and Thor. You have to get…tiny.

With the blu-ray release of Marvel’s “Ant-Man” this week, the studio is “going small” by giving fans a new way to look at the world of Scott Lang, the secret identity of the titular hero as played by Paul Rudd.

I received a neat little “Ant-Man” memento courtesy of the film studio and toymaker Janky Toys. It was a miniaturized replica of the blu-ray, complete with its own sleeve!

Stark Industries takes over Gillette to create Avengers-inspired razors?

So…last night I kept hearing about this “top secret event” that was going to take place this morning, something involving Stark Industries (as in Tony Stark) and the Gillette Razor. Of course it had to do with the upcoming release of “Age of Ultron”, so you know they were gonna do something big. Turns out that they had staged a “takeover” of the Gillette labs by Tony Stark, which resulted in the creation of a number of razors that were inspired by four of the Avengers, namely Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor. (It’s beyond me why the Hulk would even need a razor. Does he even think about shaving?)

As far as marketing stunts go, this one will make you chuckle:

Of course, this got me thinking that we’d be getting some cool, superhero razors. Alas it was not to be. Way to get my hopes up guys!

Debating Peter Parker versus Miles Morales in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

I’m honored to have been brought on board as a contributor to the new Gabatron.com podcast network! Brainchild of former radio producer Keith Conrad, Gabatron.com is chock-full of commentary on the world of pop culture, technology and politics.

My first foray into the world of on-demand digital audio is via the podcast Geek/CounterGeek where Keith and I debate/discuss opposing views on a particular geeky topic from comics, television and movies.

Our first edition of Geek/CounterGeek has us discussing the news of Sony Pictures signing a deal with Marvel Studios to bring Spider-Man tSpider-Men_Vol_1_2_Pichelli_Variant_Textlesso the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Until now, Spider-Man was restricted from being a part of the MCU due to the licensing deal with Sony. This kept everyone’s favorite wall-crawler from appearing in Marvel Studio films like “The Avengers” or “Captain America.” Those restrictions are now gone, true believers!

But now that you can have Spidey appearing alongside Iron Man, Thor and the Black Widow, should Marvel bring in Peter Parker? Or should they go in a new direction with the “Ultimate Comics Spider-Man” in Miles Morales?

Keith and I discuss what going in either direction can entail; how Sony Pictures has flubbed with the Spider-Man franchise; and how the way Superman developed strange new powers in the Christopher Reeve films made no sense. (Of course I voiced my greater disdain for “Man of Steel” too.)

I also take a few playful shots at Damon Lindelof (LOST, Prometheus) for good measure. Please check it out and let me know what you think!

Go behind the scenes on the NEW James Bond 007 movie SPECTRE (2015)

With all the talk of Age of Ultron and The Force Awakens, it can be easy to overlook the latest installment in the James Bond 007 franchise titled “SPECTRE.”

Starring Daniel CraigMonica Bellucci and Léa Seydoux, with Christoph Waltz & Dave Bautista, the film brings the classic Bond adversary – the organization known as SPECTRE – into the 21st century.

Here’s a first-look behind the scenes of the film production, courtesy of JoBlo Movie Trailers:

Are you as psyched for this as I am?

Soldier for The Empire: Peeking Inside “The Imperial Handbook” with Dan Wallace

If you ask me, Dan Wallace is living the dream! As the author of such geek-tastic tomes like The Jedi Path and The Iron Man Manual,” he has gotten to play with some of the most iconic characters in pop culture.

Now, after giving readers a look at what it’s like to become a Jedi Knight (or follow the path to the Dark Side in Book of Sith) he delves into the life of an Imperial recruit in “Star Wars: Imperial Handbook.”

Corresponding via e-mail, Wallace and I discussed what it’s like working in the Star Wars Universe; how Stormtroopers really aren’t clones; and who would win in a face-off between Darth Vader and Iron Man:

Geek To Me: Let’s get some of the basic fanboy stuff out of the way, shall we? How long have you been a Star Wars fan?

NewessentialguidetodroidsDan Wallace: Since forever! I had the toys, memorized lines, the whole deal. I’ve soaked in Star Wars pretty much my whole life, so to have a chance to contribute a tiny piece to it in my own way is just the best.

Geek To Me: Of all the characters in the saga, which one really resonated with you the most?

Dan Wallace: Personality-wise, I’m most like C-3PO. Not particularly heroic, obsessed with minutiae and procedure. But from a favorite character standpoint I’ve always liked Lando Calrissian. He’s like Han Solo but with a lot more suaveness and gambling skills. Lando is 20% James Bond.
